Are you having histamine issues or Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD)?

Histamine is a normal chemical produced by our immune system to help protect and defend us.

Most people know about histamine from allergic reactions where it can cause:

  1. Itching and hives
  2. Runny, watery eyes
  3. Wheezing
  4. And in extreme causes a person’s tongue or throat to swell up and close – an emergency called anaphylaxis.

But because histamine can travel anywhere in the body it cause a lot more than just allergies…

Other symptoms of excess histamine include:

  • Headaches or migraines
  • Memory loss and memory troubles
  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Anxiety
  • Vertigo or Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomach pains
  • Diarrhea
  • Chest pains
  • Bladder pain
  • Burning pains, pins and needles, numbness
  • Flushing
  • Nasal congestion or sneezing
  • Hives
  • Fatigue
  • High heart rate, palpitations, and heart rhythm issues
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Muscle weakness
  • Itching, rashes or eczema

Histamine is normally produced and destroyed by our bodies, and except for any allergies, most people don’t have serious issues with histamine.

Some people do however…

Do you think you might be one of them?

Two kinds of histamine issues

We break histamine issues down into two categories: functional and pathological

What are functional histamine issues?

A common scenario we see is someone who is now suffering from histamine issues, but in exploring their story and timeline we see clear periods of time where they did not have any histamine issues – they could eat ‘high histamine’ foods in the past without any trouble, and had no histamine-related issues.

Most of these people are suffering from digestive breakdowns, and we commonly see that when the digestive system breaks down that people become unable to properly balance their histamine levels, leading to symptoms of histamine excess.

This is not a pathological issue, because once we restore digestion to normal and balance out the person’s body, the histamine excess disappears, along with the symptoms.

Pathological histamine issues

The story we hear with pathological histamine issues is that these issues have been going on for people for their entire lives, and signs of histamine excess are present throughout their timeline.

This might be because of genetic weaknesses in the pathways that get rid of histamine, or dysfunction in the cells that produce them.

While we see these people get better with time and the proper treatment, there is typically going to always be some issues with histamine. When their bodies are balanced and healthy, they can much more easily balance their histamine levels than when they are sick.

Are you wondering if histamine issues might be a problem for you?

Currently there are no good, easily accessible tests to check for histamine issues or mast cell activation disorders.

And unfortunately most doctors are still clueless about the presence of these issues…
